There are many positives to gambling. It can be a place to connect with others. Playing the cards is competitive and gives you a “high.” And, hey, the casino gives out free drinks! Where else does that happen? While it can be a fun pastime, gambling for fun can quickly turn into a gambling addiction, and a need for gambling addiction counselling.
There are a couple reasons for this phenomenon. First of all, when you win a hand or hit the jackpot, your brain releases endorphins that give you a high. This is a similar experience to when you take cocaine or another addictive drug. Secondly, often when people start gambling they have “beginner’s luck.” But as they play more, statistically they lose more. And as you lose more you naturally want to play more to redeem your experience – to win it all back. Finally, and more recently, gambling is not something that you have to go to the casino to do anymore. People can lose huge sums of money from the palm of their hand.
