What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, or CBT as it is also known, is one of the most popular counselling therapies offered in North America. This kind of counselling modality is predicated on a simple idea. That when we are aware of our thoughts and our behaviours, we are better able to control our emotions. This understanding has led to life-changing results for many people. And as this kind of therapy takes fewer sessions than some other techniques, it is the preferred modality for short-term therapy.

While controlling our emotions is a good start, it is often not the end goal for therapy. Many counselling participants feel that they want to go beyond simply controlling their emotions – they want to understand and examine them. At Evergreen Counselling Group, our therapists use CBT in concert with other counselling modalities. These include Person-Centered Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, and Emotion-Focused Therapy. By using these techniques together, you can be sure you are getting the most effective and well-rounded counselling experience possible!

In CBT Counselling, the client comes in with concerns in an area of their lives. There are a few concerns that CBT has shown to be quite effective with, including the following:

- DepressionAnxiety – Phobias – Disordered EatingSubstance Use Sexual Addiction

After identifying the area of concern, the counsellor and counselling participant talk about the ins and outs of the issue – when it started, why it has gotten worse, how it is affecting the participant. Then, approach the concern by examining each of the three main areas of psychological functioning – emotions, thoughts, and behaviours. When we become aware of our thoughts and behaviours, we can better manage our emotions! As always, if it is about a mental concern, Evergreen Counselling Group recommends counselling in concert with your family doctor – with both a counsellor and physician on your team, you are more likely to get positive results!
