How Much Does Avoiding Counselling Cost?
Canadians enthusiastically embrace their physical health, and spend billions each year following the latest workout or diet fads. However, they are much less willing to spend time and resources to address their mental health. This can come at a huge cost – both individually and relationally. When we think about our physical health, we hold to the saying “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” We know that if we invest resources into our physical health – eat better or workout more frequently – then we will reap the benefits in the future. Avoiding counselling costs can cost you in the long term.
When it comes to our mental health, this same mindset doesn’t always transfer. Sometimes it seems like we wait as long as possible before going to seek help. But if we don’t address our mental health concerns while they are small issues, they can grow until they negatively affect our physical health, relationships, and the people we love most. According to a recent survey by the Mental Health Commission in Canada, 1 in 5 individuals struggle with mental health concerns, and the economic cost of this is over $50 billion a year!
