What is Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD)?

ADHD, or Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, is a common psychological concern that affects roughly 10% of all children in North America, and 2% of the adult population. While it is more common in males than females, females still comprise a significant portion of all cases. There are two kinds of ADHD. The first is inattentive, where the person has a hard time paying attention to details or listening. The second is hyperactive, in which the person fidgets or has a hard time staying still.

While it does have benefits to creativity and a “super focus” that sometimes comes when under pressure, many of the associations with this condition are negative. Especially if unidentified and not treated, many kids who struggle with this concern have lower grades and are at a higher risk for substance abuse. Medical treatments for this concern are prevalent, although there are sometimes drawbacks to these as well. Evergreen Counseling Group recommends talking to your family doctor about concerns in concert with seeking counselling to get the most wholistic results.

From an outsider’s perspective, it might seem that your child or partner who has this condition isn’t thinking or doesn’t care. The fact is that they do care, and they are thinking – but their way of thinking is different from normative functioning. However, there are simple steps that you can take to get your ADHD “under control.” If approached in this manner, you can learn to live with this condition, while appreciating the benefits it provides. Our counsellors know about this firsthand. In fact Jadon Ward, the founder of Evergreen Counselling Group, has diagnosed ADHD and has been living with it his whole life! Come in for a FREE, 25 Min, Complimentary Consultation to talk more about this condition and what counselling can do for you.

Life with ADHD can be difficult.

Evergreen Counselling Group therapists Jadon Ward and Nicholle Miller both have diagnosed ADHD, and first hand experience managing the ups and downs of this mental health condition. In their own words:

Jadon Ward:

Nicholle Miller: Living with ADHD or other forms of neurodivergence often means navigating a world that wasn’t designed with your brain in mind. Many of my clients—especially women—come to me after years of feeling like something was “off,” only to later discover they’ve been living with undiagnosed ADHD. The challenges with executive functioning, the overwhelm, the freeze response, and the frustration of not being able to follow through on goals despite deep desire and intention— are all experiences I understand.

As someone with ADHD myself, I know how hard it can be to keep track of appointments, complete therapy homework, or sit still when your body needs to move. That’s why I offer a flexible, inclusive space that recognizes how your brain works. I have experience working with clients with ADHD, and I can help you manage the challenges of neurodivergence—from breaking through paralysis and overwhelm to building strategies that support your unique way of thinking, feeling, and doing.

Together, we’ll work toward understanding your brain, developing self-compassion, and creating a life that actually works for you!
