What is Stress Counselling?

Life is busy. Sometimes it feels like there are not enough hours in a day to accomplish everything that we need to! In our North American society, we have it worse than most. At work, we are constantly being told to be more productive. And since the pandemic, “leaving work at the office” hasn’t been a reality! At home, alerts to our ever-present cellphones to a looming sense of FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) mean that we never have a chance to relax. We live our lives in a stressful environment! That is one reason why stress counselling is so important.

While this boosts our bodies’ performance capabilities for a while, long-term pressure like this can have severe drawbacks. Chronic stress leads to physical fatigue and a decline in mental performance. Studies have shown that high levels of stress have a strong link with heart attacks and cancer. Prolonged seasons of this can also lead to burnout. This is a place where the things in life that once gave you joy are no longer exciting. A place where you can’t just “work through it.” Burnout is your body telling you “Enough is enough!”

How Does Counselling Help with Stress and Burnout?

Counselling starts with the counsellor and counselling participant talking about everything going on in the participants life. Together they can create a “Personal Stress Profile,” which identifies the specific areas of concern for the participant. When this is done, the counsellor will work with the participant to come up a plan for change. Often, this starts with a new way of thinking about stress. Other times, this comes with a restructuring of life, one that allows for production but also rest.
