The Need for Counselling for Men

In North American culture, there is an idea perpetrated of the “Macho Man.” This image of the man as a leader, self-reliant, never needing to seek help and direction. Even if you do not hold to this ideal, there is a good chance some of its values have shaped your life. Certainly, this concept seems to be active in our culture. That is why there is a need for counselling for men.

It is normal for people to have ups and downs, and to seek help when they are in trouble. But men have been trained since birth to “walk it off,” that tears are for “sissies,” that “feelings are for women.” This leads to a negative scenario, where women are twice as likely as men to seek help when they need it. This can have disastrous effects – while females tend to open up to people about their struggles, men are more likely to numb negative feelings which addictive escapes such as alcohol use or gambling.
